About Southwark

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn
The London Borough of Southwark in south London forms part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London and London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It was created in 1965 when three smaller council areas amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. All districts of the area are within the London postal district. It is governed by Southwark London Borough Council.
At the 2001 census Southwark had a population of 244,866. Southwark was ethnically 63% white, 16% black African and 8% black Caribbean. By 2018 the population was 317,256, with 53% white, 16% black African and 6% black Caribbean. 31% of householders were owner–occupiers.
The area is the home of many Nigerian (Peckham is largely regarded as the heart of London's Nigerian community), Jamaican, South African, Polish, and French immigrants

Denise Miguel
Hi, I'm Denise,
I am a mother of two, a Nursery Nurse, 1:1 Diet Plan Coach/Consultant and a community activist and volunteer.
I joined Soul Purpose 360 because I believe in empowering Black women. When Black women feel supported, they learn new things and excel in life.
I want to encourage and support other women, who may have been at a disadvantage due to a variety of reasons. I want to have a positive impact in their lives. I am happy to use my experience and knowledge to help other women. I want to learn from others with the aim of empowering one another.

Black Poppies in Clay:
A Creative Gathering for Black Women
With Marie Braithwaite
Black Poppies in Clay: A Creative Gathering for Black Women.
Ceramist Maria Lucas will guide us as we each create a Black Poppy Rose in remembrance of Black women who served during global conflicts. Come and join us for a joyful and reflective workshop where we will shape black poppies out of clay, inspired by the Black Poppy Rose. Together, we’ll create, share stories, and honour the strength and history of our communities. This is a welcoming space for Black women to connect, relax, and celebrate creativity.
No experience needed—just bring yourself, your energy, and your imagination.
